Take a step back in time to the 1960s – think ‘flower power’, think ‘psychedelic’, think ‘Janis Joplin’ and especially think ‘tie dye’.
The History of Tie Dye
Practised for centuries in Asia and Africa, the technique was picked up by the hippies of the 1960s in the USA, usually to be practised while tripping, after taking copious quantities of LSD ! Prior to ‘Tie Dye’, ‘Shibori’ and ‘Batik’ techniques were also used occasionally in Western fashion before the 1960s. Tie-dying did not really become a fashion fad until the late 1960s following the example set by rock stars such as Janis Joplin and open air Rock Concerts such as ‘Woodstock’, where ‘Tie Dye’ clothes were abound !
In the late 1960’s Haute Couture designers such as Christian Dior and Jonathan Logan picked up on the craze and made it mainstream. In London ‘Gordon Deighton’ created tie-dyed shirts and trousers for young fashionable men which he sold through the Simpsons of Piccadilly department store. The fad had now become an everyday item of fashionable clothing.
