Henri de Toulouse Lautrec  1864  – 1901  Lautrec_01
A small man in stature, with enormous talent !  Born into French aristocracy and injured as a child, Lautrec’s growth was stunted which caused him much suffering, but he did love to draw!  While still a young man, he moved to Paris and quickly discovered the brothels, music halls and off beat bars of the notorious Montmartre !

This was the era of ‘La Belle Époque’ and mainstream Paris was aglow with elegance, opulence and wealth. Lautrec’s Paris however, was lived mainly in the underworld of the music halls, cabarets, circus and back street bars, all of which would eventually contribute to his demise !

He gradually gained entrée into the evocative world of the prostitutes and so called misfits!  They befriended and trusted the seemingly harmless little Henri, with his well mannered ways.  He was made most welcome and took up residence painting all aspects of their lives, public and very private!

It is in this world that Lautrec’s most famous, intimate and criticised works were created. The Paris salon of the day rejected his way of life and branded his artworks ‘degenerate’!  Today they are regarded as masterpieces.

EVENT FORMAT:
The film is preceded with wine and nibbles in the candlelit courtyard. Followed by an introduction and an especially created slideshow of Lautrec’s most infamous artworks ! We then enjoy a one hour documentary about the man behind the art !  This documentary is a BBC production, including historically researched stories, video footage, interviews and photographs.   After the film, enjoy a stretch and a short coffee break. We close the evening with a brief Q & A session with Krystyna Ciesiolkiewicz.  Event concludes at 9.00 pm.
