GENERAL PAINTING – SESSION 1/PROJECT 1
The first ‘General Painting’ project for Term 3 has two components.
The first is being delivered online here. Hopefully we’ll be back in the Studio for the second part. If the lockdown continues, we’ll progress with the second part in another video.
What you need:
- colourful magazines
- scissors
- glue stick
- pencil
- paper (sketch book)
AND AWAY WE GO …..
Watch Krysia’s explanation of the first project!
The project has then been broken down into the various steps below.
STEP 1:
Watch the “florals” slideshow, taking note of the different tonal values used within each shape. Remember each tone has a shape.
STEP 2:
The pdf link contains a range of floral photographs (in black & white and colour) – so you can see the different tonal values.
Choose something that you can work with or you are free to source your own image.
You can also use different components from different images.

STEP 3:
Using your pencil, create several quick thumbnail sketches to create your design. Work in your sketch pad. Each sketch will inform the other. Take time to establish your composition. Keep it simple!
See the example to give you an idea.
Once you’re happy with your sketch move onto Step 4.
STEP 4:
Now, grab your magazines and you’re looking for blocks of colour that would be suitable for your composition.
Cut anything out that you think might suit.
Next, start arranging your cut-out shapes on a clean sheet of paper (sketch pad is fine).
Once you’re happy with the design, grab your glue stick and get sticking!
