Liana Vargas says: “When someone mentions the Roaring Twenties, it conjures up the Jazz Age, Flappers, Prohibition, the Charleston, Gangsters, The Great Gatsby, Mary Pickford, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.  This was also the period of ‘Art Deco’ a classical, symmetrical, rectilinear style that reached its high point between 1925-1935.  It drew its inspiration from such serious art movements as Cubism, Futurism, and the influence of the ‘Bauhaus’.  In Paris, ‘Art Deco’ was the most dominant art form of the 1920 – 1930 period”.

About Tamara de Lempicka (1898 – 1980)

The Polish ‘Art Deco’ celebrity painter who became the first woman artist to be a star herself !

Influenced by Cubism, Lempicka became the leading representative of the ‘Art Deco’ style across two continents.  Through the 1900’s she was the favourite artist of many Hollywood stars, and was referred to as ‘the baroness with a brush’.  She was the most fashionable portrait painter of her generation, in particular among the bourgeoisie and aristocracy, painting Duchesses, Grand Dukes, Socialites and Celebrities. (See samples of Lempicka’s work below.)

The Workshop stages . . . (new process)

On receipt of your booking and deposit ($75) Splashout will email you a selection of 6 Lempicka images (not shown on this page).  You will be asked to choose the image that you would like to re-create in the Workshop.  This will be the subject for your Tamara de Lempicka look-a-like art piece.

On workshop day Liana will open with a slideshow of Lempicka artworks which are dramatic, theatrical, colour-filled and strong.
The slideshow will be accompanied by a brief history.

Liana feels the best way to study the methods and techniques of Art Deco Super Woman ‘Tamara de Lempicka’ is to actually draw and paint one of her stand out paintings !   To accomplish this, we will email you a mix Lempicka photographs to choose one painting from.  The selected photo will then be colour printed and gridded up ready for your arrival.

We will ensure that each canvas is pre-painted and pre-gridded (to match the photograph) prior to workshop.  This will streamline the initial drawing stage for you.  Once all the drawings are complete, Liana will bring the group together and demonstrate how to commence the painting stage.

Throughout the workshop Liana will move through the group, person to person, assisting each stage of this transcription, as required.   From time to time she will also bring the group together to assess its progress in relation to the goal of all completing a finished Lempicka by the end of the workshop.

Prior to departure we shall display the works together for viewing and feedback.  Of course you won’t be able to sell your finished painting as a ‘Lempicka’ because you are producing a study.

DSC00084About Liana Vargas

Liana’s first career was dance.  She commenced her study of ‘Flamenco’ in Madrid, Spain.  Having learnt from the best, she then travelled the world, performing in venues such as London’s ‘Royal Albert Hall’, ‘Covent Garden’ and ‘Sadlers Wells’.  After a highly successful career, she returned to Adelaide and turned her creative aspirations to another form of self expression, ART.

In 2014 Liana attained her ‘Bachelor of Visual Arts’ (BVA) and shortly after was offered ‘Artist in residence’ at the ‘Scuola Internationale de Grafica’ in Venice, which of course she took.

On returning again to South Australia, Liana established her business presenting art classes for young people and teens at various venues through the Adelaide Hills, including her studio at Littlehampton.  2016 Liana joined the ‘Splashout Team’ as a ‘Guest Workshop Presenter’ and ‘Instructor General Painting’.
